Jennie Mills

March 1, 1939 — August 31, 2021

Jennie Windsor Mills was born on March 1, 1939, in Huntington, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Anderson Price Windsor and Fay Windsor, both of Huntington,W. Va. Jennie graduated from Huntington High School in 1957, and then went on to earn a BA in English and Library Science, from Marshall University.

She married Liston Oury Mills in December, 1962. At that time they relocated to Nashville, TN. In Nashville, Jennie created a lovely home and a wonderful group of friends, who became like family over the next 59 years. An elegant and hard working woman, Jennie was a devoted wife, mother, and friend.

Prior to marriage Jennie worked as a field secretary for Alpha Xi Delta Sorority as well as the Morrow Library at Marshall University. Jennie went on to have careers as a school librarian, working for non profits, and party and event planning. Volunteer service was also of great importance volunteering at Vanderbilt Hospital and The Heart Institute  at St. Thomas. Jennie loved to travel, and was able to travel extensively with friends and family.

Later in life Jennie focused on supporting the organizations that were special to her. She established the Mills Pastoral Counseling Scholarship at Vanderbilt University, and helped to organize and assist with the Pastoral Counseling Center of Tennessee. Jennie was deeply committed to her church as well. She and Liston joined Immanuel Baptist Church, in Nashville, shortly after moving, and she remained a active member for life. She especially loved her Sunday School Class, in which some of her most beloved friendships were forged. In addition to her church, Jennie was also a long time member of the Junior League of Nashville, The Fort Nashboro Chapter of the DAR, and the Vanderbilt Woman’s Club.

Preceded in death by her husband, and love of her life, Liston Oury Mills, Jennie is survived by her only child Sarah Mills Collier and son in law Aaron Collier of Wilmington, NC. She also leaves behind three nephews as well as great nephews and nieces, and many beloved cousins.

There will be a private memorial service on September 13, at 2 pm at Immanuel Baptist Church, Nashville, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the  Mills Scholarship at Vanderbilt Divinity School, Nashville TN, Immanuel Baptist Church, Nashville, TN or a charity that you support.
