J. Howard Barrick

Dr. Jewell Howard Barrick, age 96, passed away on October 12, 2021. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Lillian J. Barrick, parents, Jewell H. Barrick, Sr. and Kate B. Barrick, his sister, Martha B. (Finley) Robbins and brother, Richard H. (Bettye) Barrick.

He is survived by his sons, Mason (Kay) Barrick and Steven (Jan) Barrick, grandchildren, Kate (Jeff) Plunk, John (Amy) Barrick, Houston (Laura) Barrick, Johnson (Kristen) Barrick, Sanders (Aneta) Barrick, Laura (Brad) Duncan, great-grandchildren, John Mason, Kaylynn and Bella Barrick, Kirsten, Braxton, and Barrick Plunk, Charlotte and John Houston Barrick, Hudson Barrick, Austin (Kaitlyn) Duncan and Garth Duncan.

Howard was born on July 11, 1925, in Springfield, TN. He served admirably in the US Navy during WWII aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga from 1943-1946. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts degree in December 1949. He completed his professional graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina with a Master of Public Health in 1963 and a Doctor of Public Health in 1965. He spent his entire work career with the Tennessee Department of Public Health retiring in 1990. Howard was avid sports fan, UT Vols, Cincinnati Reds, Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators. He enjoyed playing golf, watching his kids and grandkids play sports, working crossword puzzles, collecting baseball cards and spending time with his family. He and Lillian were longtime members of Belle Meade United Methodist Church.

Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday from 12-2 PM at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Graveside service will be held at 3 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
