Charles (Chuck) B. Myers

Obituary

Charles B. (Chuck) Myers died on  April 27th  .  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lynn Knisely Myers, sons, Jeff (Alena) and Brian (Debi); grandchildren, Cassie (Matt) Chandler, Carina Myers and Cory Myers; step-grandchildren, Kyle Morgan, Courtney Morgan and Lee(Krystal) Morgan; great-grandchildren, Lacey, Lily, Landon, Lincoln Chandler, Lea and Emma Morgan and Kalena Morgan, brother, Bernard Myers of Lewes, Delaware.  He was pre-deceased by son, Mark, brother, Joe, sister, Sue and parents J. Charles and Bernice Seiple Myers.

Chuck was born and lived his childhood years in Columbia, Pennsylvania.  He attended and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University.  He was a graduate student at George Peabody College for Teachers, from which he received a Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degree.

During the 1960’s, Chuck was a classroom Teacher in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a teacher educator at Rider College, Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and a director   reform-of-teaching project in south-central Pennsylvania.  He joined the faculty of George Peabody College for Teachers in 1970 and became a member of the Vanderbilt University when Peabody and Vanderbilt merged in 1979.  He retired from Vanderbilt University in 2002.  Upon retirement, he and his wife, Lynn lived during most winters on Sanibel Island, Florida.

During his 32 years as a faculty member at Peabody and Vanderbilt, Chuck was Professor of Social Studies Education, Program Director of Programs for Educators of Youth, Chairperson of the Department of Teaching and Learning, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs of Peabody College and Assistant to the Dean for Teacher  Education.  During 1987 he was Visiting Lecturer on the faculty of Armidale College of Advanced Education, Armidale, New South Wales, Australia.

Chuck served in a number of leadership positions at the national level with the National Council for the Social Studies and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.  He chaired the Social Studies Task Force that wrote the National Standards for the Preparation of Social Studies Teachers in the 1990’s and led evaluation teams that assessed teacher education programs at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Chuck authored and co-authored more that 20 professional education books.  He also authored a number of Profession monographs and book chapters.  Chuck’s wife Lynn served as co-author for several of the endeavors.

In 2002, Chuck was selected by the College of Education of Penn State University to receive its Excellence in Education award.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Henry Church at a later date.  Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ronald McDonald House, St. Thomas West Hospital volunteer program, or a charity of your choice.
