William Thomas Coward, III, affectionately known as "Bill," was born on February 3, 1944, in Harriman, Tennessee, to the late William Thomas Coward, Jr. and Louise Gardner Coward. He entered into eternal rest on July 20, 2026, in Dickson, Tennessee, at the age of 82.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his beloved son, Derrick Coward, and his sister, Donna Harper.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Paulette Coward; his son, Dr. Wayne (Towanna) Coward; his stepson, Jason Pitts; his sister, Nancy Bridges; his grandchildren, Connor (Jaxon) Lucas, Carson Coward, Mason Pitts, and Macie (Austin) Lehman; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Allie Lehman, Emma Lehman, Eli Lehman, and Waylon Pitts, along with many extended family members, friends, and former students who were blessed by his life.

Bill had a lifelong passion for music, especially the trumpet, and dedicated his career to sharing that passion as a high school band director. He taught generations of students with patience, kindness, understanding, and genuine love, leaving a lasting impact that extended far beyond the classroom. He remained in touch with many of his former students throughout the years, a testament to the meaningful relationships he built.

Outside of music, Bill found great joy in spending time with his family, playing golf, hunting, and cheering on his favorite sports teams. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army, a service he held in high regard. Among his many accomplishments, Bill was especially honored to be inducted into the Middle Tennessee State University Band of Blue Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding contributions to music education.

Bill's life was one of service, dedication, and compassion. His love for his family, his students, his country, and his music will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be fondly remembered, deeply loved, and sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.
