Born on September 21, 1950, Walter's life was marked by dedication, skill, and a warmth that touched everyone privileged to know him. He was the greatest mentor to his grandchildren and loved them endlessly.
A proud graduate of Bellevue High School, Walter’s passions extended far beyond the classroom. For 36 years, he worked with the Nashville Fire Department.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William B. and Dorothy Simmons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Vicky Berger Simmons; children, Jami (Kenny) Smith, Katie Porter, and Daniel (Jayme) Simmons; grandchildren, Philip Smith, Jamison Smith, Aidan Porter, Isaiah Porter, Andrew Porter, Judson Porter, Olivia Simmons, Brody Simmons, and Emery Simmons; siblings, Judy Fishel, Jackie (Jerry) Ashburn, and Jeanne Estrada.
Splinter was a man whose interests were varied and heartfelt. An avid golfer, he found joy in the game’s challenge and camaraderie while playing. He enriched the lives of many young athletes through his coaching of basketball, softball, and baseball, tirelessly nurturing their talents and instilling the values of teamwork. Beyond the fields and courts, he spent peaceful time gardening. His talents also extended to umpiring, where his keen eye and knowledge for the sports was appreciated and honored.
His role in the community was complemented by devotion to his faith, remaining very active in his church, where he found fellowship and purpose. Known for his culinary talent, Splinter was especially loved for his incredible cabbage soup and any delight crafted on his smoker. He made meals that often brought joy and comfort to family, friends, coworkers, and his church community.
Splinter’s legacy will be honored with services at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on April 15, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and continue the following day from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. His funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM on April 16, followed by interment at 11:00 AM.
