Steve Nanney

James Steven Nanney, age 74, passed away at home on limitations. Steve was born on December 14, 1950 to parents Archie Glenn Nanney and Devona Brake Nanney who preceded him in death. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Lillian Bradley Nanney, his daughter Sarah Nanney Hill (Matt) of Franklin, TN and his son Gregory Steven Nanney (Vivian) of St Louis, MO. He leaves behind his 6 beloved and much adored grandchildren: Wyatt Phillip Hill, Walker Steven Hill, Lillian Sarah Hill, Madeline Ann Hill, Evelyn Ling Nanney and Archer Cecil Nanney. Steve is also survived by his 5 siblings in Clarksville, TN: Glenn Nanney, Pat Nanney, Shirley Burke, Cindy Akin and Tina Barber. 

Steve enjoyed growing up in Clarksville where he graduated from Clarksville High School. During those years he met and fell in love with his high school sweetheart, enjoyed running on the cross country and track teams and made special life long friends through their mutual passions for hunting, fishing, golfing and canoeing. Steve was called into military service in 1970 and became a proud veteran of the US Army. After his service, he returned to Austin Peay State University where he enjoyed camaraderie within the Sigma Chi fraternity. Steve and Lillian then resided in New Orleans, LA for 4 years where he served as a commercial onshore and offshore construction superintendent for Southport Construction Corp. Steve and Lillian returned to their Middle Tennessee roots in 1980 and made Franklin, TN their home for the next 45 years. Steve transitioned into residential custom home building in the Brentwood area for the next decade. Eventually he became a sole proprietor for A to Z Home Inspections until his retirement in 2013 due to health limitations. 

Steve’s love for the outdoors was well known to all who knew him. Duck and dove hunting were highly favored hobbies. During the years when his son was in the Boy Scouts of America, Steve was an enthusiastic participant through his volunteer leadership activities that included weekly troop meetings, quarterly campouts, and camping and hiking trips to Philmont, Boundry Waters, and Alaska. For the last 25 years, Steve’s favorite outdoor pastime and passion was preparing for and participating with members and guests in the annual summer and fall outings of White Oak Fishing Club in Stewart County. He leaves behind longstanding friends. 

In accordance with Steve’s wishes, the family will forgo formal funeral services. Immediate family will hold a private celebration of life ceremony at a later date.
