Roxie M. Harwell, age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in Houston, Texas.
She is survived by her son, Michael Harwell and his wife, Darlene, of Houston, TX, and her two grandsons, Connor (Amy) and Ryan (Madison). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Joe Harwell.
Roxie was born on August 11, 1934, in Hot Springs, Virginia, to Walter McElwee and Lula Jackson McElwee. She graduated from Mary Washington College and the Medical College of Virginia and went on to build a dedicated career as a Medical Technologist. She worked at Frist, Scouville and Kochtitzky Clinic in Nashville, TN before retiring from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Affectionately known as “Granny” by her family, Roxie was a certified Master Gardener and a longtime volunteer with the Nashville chapter of Master Gardeners. She was also an active member of the Provost Guard Ladies of Al Menah Shrine Temple in Nashville, Tennessee, where she assisted Joe during his multiple terms as Chairman of the Al Menah Potentate’s Ball.
Roxie and Joe shared a love of travel and explored more than 14 countries together. They were also devoted members of Brook Hollow Baptist Church, where Roxie was often called upon for her gardening expertise and care of the church grounds.
Family visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, at 10:00 AM at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens -Funeral Home and Cemetery, with graveside services to follow at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospitals in memory of Roxie Harwell.
