Peggy Joyce Burnes

October 19, 1931 — August 21, 2025

Nashville

Peggy Joyce Burnes, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on August 21, 2025, at Belmont Village. Born on October 19, 1931, in Denver, Colorado, Peggy's spirit was shaped by her loving family, her passion for art, and her zest for life.

Peggy attended North High School, where she played the flute and developed her interest in journalism. Her move to Horatio, Arkansas to live with her aunt and uncle began a new journey which eventually led her to meet her future husband, James Robert Burnes (JR). Their love story blossomed after a chase that culminated in marriage on October 21, 1950. Over the years, they built a life rich with laughter and adventures. Peggy and JR were married for an incredible 73 years, overcoming numerous challenges together, their love unwavering through every trial.

Peggy retired from Roadway Express at the age of 65 where she dedicated many years as an executive secretary. Prior to working for Roadway Express, she spent many years in the school system in Colorado as a secretary. When not working, she and JR loved tending to their Appaloosa horses that they raised.

As a family, they cherished every moment spent outdoors — camping, water skiing, and exploring the countryside. Peggy, a devoted wife and mother, found joy in nurturing her family and creating lasting memories. Together with JR, they travelled across the country in their 5th wheel and pull-out trailer, sharing those experiences with their grandchildren. Her love extended to her hobbies as well; Peggy was an accomplished artist, particularly in oil painting, and spent her time expressing herself through her beautiful artwork.

Peggy is survived by her loving daughter, Sheri Reno (Tim). She also leaves behind her sister, Glenda Rein (Allen). Peggy leaves her cherished grandchildren: Joseph Woods (Kelly) and Chelsea DeVar (Jamison). She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren — Lilly Scott, Gage Scott, Logan Woods, Landon Woods, and Cora DeVar.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband JR, her son, Kent James Burnes, and her sister, Gracelynn Ralph. Peggy's legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of her family who were touched by her loving, kind, and loyal nature.

The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Peggy's remarkable life at Harpeth Hills Memory Garden, Funeral Home, & Cremation Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
