Michael "Mike" Merritt McCormack, born March 11, 1950, was the son of Col. Francis and Margaret McCormack. He grew up with four sisters - Kitty, Sharon, Tina, and Patty (all deceased) - and one surviving brother, Mark (and his wife Sharon). "Little Mac," as his childhood friends called him, graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1968, Gordon Military College in 1971, and University of South Florida in 1974. He had a quick wit and dark sense of humor and always took great pride in making others laugh. He was always the loudest laugher in a movie theater, much to the embarrassment of anyone around him. He knew all the words to any Simon & Garfunkel song, though you’d have to forgive his inability to carry a tune in a bucket (he would say he missed that one day in elementary school when they taught music to all the other kids). He was generous with anyone and everyone, picking up checks for first responders if he saw them in a restaurant and volunteering at several homeless shelters around Nashville. He was proud of his professional accomplishments as a health care executive, but he was even prouder of the ways he cared for and supported the people who worked for and with him. In his later years, he shifted his career focus to supporting persons struggling with addiction, a decades-long personal passion of his. More than anything, though, he loved his family. His wife of 47 years, Cherry, was his best friend, the love of his life, and his rock. He would shamelessly brag about his kids, Mandy (spouse Robert) and Mark (spouse Diana), and his grandkids, Lucas, Adam, and Ben, to anyone who cared to listen (and probably even to anyone who didn’t care to listen). Moments with his family were profoundly special to him, and his final moments on February 7, 2024 were fittingly spent with family by his side.
