John David Gouldener, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to William and Audrey Gouldener and remained a proud Nashvillian his entire life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Cathy, with whom he shared a deep and enduring love. Together, they built a life filled with faith, family, and service. John was a proud father to his son, Michael, who is married to Emily. He was affectionately known as “PawPaw” to his ‘one and only favorite’ grandson Hudson, who adored him and brought him immense joy. John is also survived by his loving sister, Kathy Gouldener Kirkham.
John’s school career began at Cathedral for elementary school, where he met friends that remained, 73 years later. John was a graduate of Father Ryan High School, where he forged lifelong friendships that were strong until his final days. He later earned his degree in theology from Trevecca Nazarene University.
He began his career at A.J. Smith in the lumber business, but his life took a different path when he answered a divine calling to ministry. John faithfully served in the Church of the Nazarene and as Chaplain at Metro General Hospital. His passion for sharing God’s love led him to found both Highland Park Church and Cross Road Community Church. After many years of dedicated ministry, he retired to spend more time with his family and enjoy life on The Farm — his favorite retreat where Michael built their dream house.
Family was the heart of John's world. Saturdays were often spent on the sidelines, cheering on Michael whether he was playing football with the Bellevue Steelers or baseball with the Bellevue Sports Athletic Association. As Michael continued on to Brentwood Academy, John’s pride only grew. John was also a huge football fan, cheering on the Vols and was proud Titans ticket holder where he got to experience the Music City Miracle in person, alongside his son, Michael.
His love for Cathy was unwavering — fifty years of partnership filled with shared purpose, ministry, and joy. Together they embraced grandparenthood, building treasured memories with Hudson. John often spoke with pride about their special bond — the cabin they built together, baseball games attended, and the countless moments that made him proud to be Hudson’s grandfather.
John’s legacy is one of faith, love, and unwavering devotion to the people and values that mattered most. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A small private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Bellevue Food Bank or St. Luke’s Community House to honor organizations dear to John’s heart.
