Jo Dorris Anderson, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away on Monday, December 18. She was a cherished soul whose love for her Lord Jesus Christ touched the lives of many through the years.
As a youth, Jo Dorris Jones attended Waverly Place United Methodist Church, where her faith took root and flourished. It was during her time at Waverly Place United Methodist Church that she met her future husband, Robert "Bob" Anderson, through the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF). Their initial meeting led to a beautiful marriage that lasted 64 years and brought forth four children: Andy, Jeff (wife Lisa), Laura (husband Kevin Slater), and Matt (wife Becky). Jo found immense joy in her role as a mother and was a pillar of support for her children as they navigated life's challenges. Her heart overflowed with love for her grandchildren: Laws, Ashley, Clayton, Rebekah, Miller, and Hannah. She delighted in watching them grow and always offering her unwavering support and guidance.
Though she faced the tragedy of losing a son, Robert William Anderson Jr (Andy), at an early age, her strength and love continued to shine, inspiring all who knew her. She is rejoicing at the heavenly reunion with Andy!
An active member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church for 51 years, Jo was an integral part of the church community. She dedicated herself to various roles, serving as a Sunday school teacher, Bible study leader, and a cherished member of the church choir and handbells choir. Her commitment extended further as she held the position of President of the United Methodist Women (UMW), where her leadership and dedication shone brightly.
Jo's thirst for knowledge was insatiable. She was not only a dedicated student but a lifelong learner. Graduating as salutatorian from West High School ('56), she continued as an active member of the West High School Alumni Association. She earned both an undergraduate and master’s degree in Education from the George Peabody College for Teachers, showcasing her commitment to education. She loved sharing books with her grandchildren, and in her later years, she continued her intellectual pursuits by auditing college courses as an 80-year-old, inspiring those around her with her lifelong dedication to education.
Jo was also known for her thoughtfulness. She held the reputation of being the first person to send a birthday card, anniversary card, or note of condolence or congratulations. Her consistent and caring gestures touched many hearts, offering comfort and joy to those she knew and loved.
Her warm smile and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Celebration Service Details: A celebration of Jo's life will take place at Forest Hills United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 21, at 2:00 PM, preceded by visitation from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. The service aims to honor her memory, celebrate her enduring legacy, and reflect on the love she shared with everyone. Given Jo's love for Christmas, casual attire and Christmas-themed clothing are not just welcomed but also encouraged as a joyful tribute to her festive spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Forest Hills United Methodist Church Music Department in memory of Jo Dorris Anderson.
While she may have departed from our sight, her love will endure, finding eternal rest in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ and forever residing in our hearts.
