James (Jimmy) Butner a cherished husband and devoted friend passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the age of 68. Jimmy was born in Nashville, Tennessee to his late parents James Richard Butner and Mildred Louise (Williams) Butner.

The world grew a little dimmer with Jimmy’s passing. His light touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. A devoted businessman, a loyal friend, he built his legacy not only through his work, but through the countless acts of kindness that defined his days.

He approached business and people with generosity, integrity, and a genuine desire to make things better. Many lives were brightened by his unwavering support and he had no greater passion than to quietly serve others. Jimmy served on the Board of Directors of The Ark Community Resource Center in Cheatham County where his work helped provide essential services to those in the community. He served on the Kingston Springs Fire Department as a volunteer for 25 years and his final rank held was Chief. Kingston Springs Fire Department Station #2 was named Butner Hall to recognize the service of such a servant leader.

After completing high school at Cheatham County Central High School, Jimmy attended Nashville State Technical College and had plans to become a draftsman. Jimmy’s career was altered when he was given the opportunity to learn about the car industry. After working several years at the Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealership in Dickson, Tennessee, Jimmy opened Specialty Auto Sales in 1992 where he owned and operated his business in Dickson County for 32 years.

Jimmy was the heartbeat of every gathering. His laughter filled rooms, Jimmy’s stories drew people close, and his enthusiasm for life was contagious. Jimmy made everyone feel valued. Jimmy’s circle of friends was wide, but each person held a special place in his world and in his heart. Jimmy enjoyed 1970’s music, watching football, showing classic cars and spending time at the lake but more than anything, he loved being surrounded by the people he cared about.

He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, joy, and deep human connection. Those who loved him will remember his warmth, his optimism, and the way he made ordinary moments feel extraordinary. Though his absence will be felt profoundly, the impact of his kindness will continue to ripple through the lives he touched.

Survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 47 years, Tina Butner, sister, Brenda (Butner) Kean and a host of nieces and nephews as well as many lifelong friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 25th from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and Thursday, March 26th from 9:30 am – 11:30 am. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 26th at 11:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jimmy’s memory to the Kingston Springs Fire Department, the Ark Community Resource Center or Cheatham County Animal Control.
