James S. Myrick, Jr., 100, passed away January 25th, 2024, in Nashville, TN.
Born June 9th, 1923, in Monroe, LA, to Katherine Inez Day Myrick and James S. Myrick, Sr. He was a graduate of Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK (Airline Service Mechanic), the University of Denver, and Vanderbilt University. He was a retired American Airlines Captain with over 32 years of service. He was a World War II veteran with 4 years of active duty service as a Naval Aviator flying dive bombers with an air craft group aboard the aircraft carrier Princeton in the post-war, western Pacific Ocean. He served many years as a pilot in the active Naval Reserve before retiring after 20 years with the rank of Commander, US. Naval Reserve. His last duty was Commanding Officer of a Fleet Transport Squadron.
He was a long time resident of middle Tennessee in Nashville and Dickson, raising cattle many years on his farm in Dickson County. He was a former member of the Dickson Rotary Club, Dickson First United Methodist Church, and Pioneer Bible Class, and he was also a longtime Sunday School teacher and board member. He was a current member of Stephens Valley Church.
One of the biggest highlights of his teen years was as a member of the 1942 Southwestern Louisiana football team getting to play against the University of Alabama. Alabama won 54-6.
He and his wife, Mary, loved to travel, and over the years, they were able to visit a large portion of the world, most of the time aboard a cruise ship.
This past June, he was able to celebrate his 100" birthday with 2 wonderful celebrations, one with his family and one with his Stephens Valley Church family.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Craig Hanna Myrick; his younger brother, Thomas D. Myrick (Ada); his grandson, Norbert Vaughn; and his granddaughter, Holly Brown. He is survived by his wife: Mary McCuen Myrick; his four children: Ken Myrick (Janice Myrick) of Dickson, TN, Lynn Myrick (Joel Vaughn) of Binghamton, NY, Tom Myrick of Lyles, TN, and Beth Geddes of Fairhope, AL; his six
grandchildren: Tucker Daniel, Sara Daniel, Hanna Downing (Ridge), Emer Vaughn (Alin Cosmanescu), Melissa Myrick, and Heather Self (Billy) and several great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3 at 11 AM at Stephens Valley Church with visitation to follow at the church. Burial will be February 5 at 2 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Greer, SC.
