Howard Walton Scruggs, born on August 23, 1970, in Nashville, Tennessee, left this world much too soon on October 7, 2025. Walton was a radiant soul whose warmth touched the lives of everyone who knew him. His infectious laughter and loving nature will forever be cherished by family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
Walton is preceded in death by his parents, John Bridges Scruggs III and Eugenia “Duffie” McDuffie.
Walton is survived by his brother, John Scruggs, as well as multiple friends and staff at the Mid-TN Supported Living and his lifelong friend Annie who followed him through his life with compassion and love along side her husband Dix who also preceded Walton in death.
From an early age, Walton was blessed with a joyful spirit. He loved attending church with his mom, finding solace and strength in the community there. His memories of dance nights with his dad are etched in his heart. Walton had a unique ability to light up any room. The words that best describe Walton are happy, funny, outgoing, loving, and caring. Walton was a special child of God and remained a child whom we all love dearly.
Walton’s interests ran deep; as an avid bowler and swimmer, he found joy in simple pleasures. His adventurous spirit shown bright during his time at Camp Discovery, where he made memories that would last a lifetime. Whether it was shopping sprees or enjoying delicious meals, Walton delighted in every experience. A true foodie at heart, he would indulge in meals of all kinds—except for mushrooms and olives, which he firmly believed had their place far away. His favorites included white birthday cake, McDonald's, and pizza, with no mushrooms, of course.
Art was another of Walton’s passions, especially when he got to participate with Annie. Creating masterpieces together brought him happiness and allowed him to express himself in ways that couldn’t be conveyed with words. Each piece Walton and Annie created together was a celebration of friendship.
Bingo nights were a staple of Walton’s calendar, as well as dancing to music on the dance floor. His love for animals, particularly dogs and cats, showcased his gentle heart. Walton was so deeply loved and reciprocated that love towards others. He came to reside at Mid-TN Supported Living in August of 2010, and there he made friendships that were more like family. He will be deeply missed by all of his Mid-TN family.
Visitation will take place on October 17, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, followed by the Funeral Service at 11:30 AM, and interment immediately following at 12:30 PM. All services will be held at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mid-TN Supported Living, Inc. in Walton’s honor.
