Harold Eugene "Gene" Cunningham, Sr., 94, of Nashville, TN, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026 in Nashville, TN under the care of Alive Hospice after a short illness.

Gene was born in Nashville, TN to the late Lacy and Delia Cunningham on January 21, 1932. He graduated from Central High School, Nashville, TN. After high school, he went on to serve in the United States Army where he was stationed in Panama. Upon leaving the service, he attended George Peabody College, Nashville, TN, and then went to work in the automotive industry for Ford Motor Company until retirement. Outside of work, Gene was passionate about all things golf, and lived life with a club in his hand and a smile on his face that was made even brighter after having made 3 holes-in-one in his lifetime. He was a charter member of Temple Hills Country Club and a long-time member of Capital City Golf Association holding many leadership roles, including President. He will also be remembered for his kindness, witty sense of humor, and excellent dance skills. Above all, he was a devoted follower of Christ, it was his love for his family, and his church that truly held the most meaning.

Surviving family members include his children Monte Cunningham, Donna Cunningham Altshuler (John), Arnold “Arnie” Cunningham, and Troy Cunningham (Nancy); grandchildren Caitlin Cunningham, Kellee Cunningham Lopez (Sear), Harold E. “Trey” Cunningham, III, Chloe Cunningham Kaspar (Kevin), Phoebe Cunningham, Grant Altshuler (Aubrey), Sofia and Ava Cunningham; 6 great grandchildren with a 7th due in August. He is also survived by his brother Ernest “Sonny” (Judy) Cunningham, sister Linda Cunningham Thornton, and sister-in-law Claudette Cunningham; 4 nieces and numerous cousins. Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Wilma, as well as his parents, his son, Harold E. “Hal” Cunningham, Jr., his wife Summer Cunningham, and brother James Cunningham. Family will receive visitors on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 10:00 am with services to follow at 11:00 am at Bellevue Church of Christ, 7401 Highway 70 S, Nashville, TN 37221. Interment will be held directly afterwards at the Jenkins Family Cemetery in Lyles, TN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bellevue Church of Christ Senior Ministries, 7401 Hwy 70 S, Nashville, TN 37221. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caring staff of St. Thomas Hospital West (5th Floor) and Alive Hospice Nashville for their care and support.
