Obituary

E. Philip “Phil” Grammer Jr., a lifelong member of the Nashville community, passed away on March 23, 2026 at the age of 85.

Phil is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lina Wells Grammer; parents, Eugene Philip Grammer Sr. and Lillian Bonner Grammer; and siblings, John Grammer and Pat Owen.

He is survived by his children, Mandy Grammer (Tim) Gauldin, and Tiffany Grammer (Kevin) Kimbro; and grandchildren, Ben Gauldin, Jack Gauldin, Maggie Kimbro, Lila Kimbro, and Bea Kimbro.

Born on February 25, 1941, Phil was a remarkably well-rounded athlete. He earned accolades for football in the backfield at Hillsboro High and Middle Tennessee State. His love of competition and athletics lead him to his calling.

After graduating from Middle, he had an accomplished career as both a Football and Track & Field coach for over 25 years in Metro and another six in Williamson County. His work ethic, humor and passion impacted the lives of the many young men and women that he coached. He said he couldn’t imagine going through life without loving what you do.

In retirement, Phil’s life was framed by community and deep devotion to family. He was an avid golfer and had a long-time group that he played with over the years. He was also a dedicated member of the Brotherhood Sunday School Class at Forest Hills Baptist Church.

G-Daddy, as his family affectionately refers to him, lived a life of generosity and sacrificial love. His contentious and playful spirit will be greatly missed. He and Lina were married for 56 years. Their demonstration of love and commitment to one another is a gift to his children and grandchildren that will reverberate for generations.

The community is invited to pay their respects during the visitation on March 28, 2026, from 9:30am to 11:30am. The funeral service will begin at 11:30am, with the interment immediately following. All services will be held at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home and Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home in Phil’s honor.
