Conway Todd Hughes Jr.

January 24, 1929 — November 28, 2023

Conway Todd Hughes, Jr., “Bud,” of Nashville passed away on November 28, 2023, at the age of 94.

He will be lovingly remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor by his children: Russie (Larry) Hamm, Connie Hughes, Todd Hughes, Ruth (Stan) Lipski, and Randle (Rodney) Ellis; nephew, Billy (Tammy) Hughes; grandchildren: Matthew Hamm, Corey Hamm, Austin Fleishour, and Molly Lipski (Matthew) Powell; and great-granddaughter, Evelyn Hamm.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor “Totty” Holder Hughes; brother, William “Bill” Hughes; son-in-law, Kenny Sexton; and an unrelentingly loyal pack of former hunting dogs.

Born on January 24, 1929, in Winchester, TN to Helen and Conway Hughes, Bud attended Tennessee Technical Institute for engineering and served in the US Army in Italy in World War II.

A consummate sports and outdoorsman, Bud enjoyed hunting (dove and duck), fishing (freshwater and saltwater), skeet shooting, and working with his impeccably trained hunting dogs. Over his lifetime, Bud developed a love for training his own hunting dogs, forming an unbreakable bond with a handful of dedicated companions. Their training was a testament to his unwavering determination (some might call it stubbornness) and his devotion to man's best friend. He was involved with the National Rifle Association and was a dedicated member of Ducks Unlimited.

Bud could build or fix anything, from the original Opryland to the house his five children grew up in and in which he resided until his passing. He was a fan of the Atlanta Braves, all forms of football, golf, and any sweet treat his daughters and friends dropped by to share – chocolates, cookies, and peanut brittle never lasted long. He’d often recommend you keep a good book on hand, remind you that “gettin’ old ain’t for sissies,” and point out that jeans weren’t meant to have holes in them when you bought them.

Bud’s family and friends will honor him in a Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 13th from 2-4 pm at the River Plantation Clubhouse: 7508 Old Harding Rd, Nashville, TN 37221.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Ducks Unlimited in Bud’s honor.
