Fairview, Tennessee

Clare Wynns Adams Smith, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and longtime Nashville resident, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, at 5:55 p.m. CST, at the age of 90.

Born on November 8, 1935, in Union City, Tennessee, Clare was the daughter of the late Edward Reeves Adams and Frances Elizabeth Wynns Adams. She was preceded in death by, Laverte C. “Smitty” Smith, Jr., and their son, Christopher Reeves Smith.

Clare graduated from Gulf Park College for Women in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1959.

A woman of many talents and an irrepressible spirit, Clare owned and operated her own flower shop, where her skill as a florist brought beauty and warmth to countless weddings, events, and homes. Later in her career, she retired from Metro Nashville Schools, where she served with dedication and grace.

Clare loved cooking and baking for family and friends, mastering the art of Southern hospitality through her delicious meals and homemade treats. She was a classicly trained pianist, and an avid card player, relishing games and laughter with loved ones, and her floral arrangements reflected her creative spirit and generous heart. She enjoyed spending time outdoors with her many friends at Maple Village. Above all, she was known for her infectious laugh—a bright, contagious sound that could fill a room and lift everyone’s spirits in an instant.

Clare is survived by her loving children: Laverte Clay Smith, III (Melissa) of Freeport, Florida; loving caregiver, Edward Adams Smith (Amy) of Burns, Tennessee; John Wynns Smith of Old Hickory, Tennessee; Thomas Rotier Smith (Tina) of La Vergne, Tennessee; and Leeza Clare Smith of Lacey, Georgia. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life and the joyful recipients of her endless love, wisdom, stories, baked goods, and that unforgettable laugh.

Clare’s warmth, grace, nurturing nature, and joyful presence touched everyone who knew her. Whether arranging flowers with artistic precision, preparing a comforting meal, sharing a kind word, or lighting up the room with her laughter, she lived a life defined by love, service, and genuine delight in others. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the beauty, joy, and happiness she brought to the world.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.

Rest in peace, Mom,—your legacy of love, creativity, kindness, and that wonderful, infectious laugh lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know you.
