Alice Goforth Smith, 90, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2026. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Earnest Harold Smith and parents, Lillian and William Goforth.

Alice is survived by her two nephews, Wayne Smith (Jeanie) and Mark Smith (Jamie), a grand-nephew, Nathan Smith (Jessie), grand-niece, Natalie Bean (Stephen) and great-grandnieces and nephews, Zoey Bean, Norah Bean, Zeke Smith and Ollie Smith along with several close neighbors and friends.

A graduate of Berea College in Kentucky, Alice dedicated more than 40 years of her professional life to her work as a microbiologist at the Ellington Agricultural Research Center. Her long career reflected her excellence, dedication, and commitment to the work she valued.

Outside of her profession, Alice had a wonderfully creative spirit. She loved arts and crafts, especially knitting and basket weaving. She enjoyed expressing herself through the many things she created. Whether working on a new project or simply appreciating something beautiful, her artistic nature was an important part of who she was.

Alice and her husband shared a tremendous love for animals, especially dogs and cats. Their beloved pets brought them great happiness and companionship throughout the years, and together they had a special place in their hearts for the animals fortunate enough to be in their care.

Perhaps most importantly, Alice was a dear and treasured friend to many. She formed lasting friendships and was someone whose presence, kindness, and companionship meant a great deal to those who knew her. The friendships she cultivated over the years are a reflection of the caring person she was.

Alice leaves behind a legacy of friendship, creativity, dedication, and compassion. She will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and all those whose lives were made brighter by knowing her.

The family cordially invites relatives and friends to visit on Monday, September 14, 2026, from one o’clock in the afternoon until the time of the graveside service at two o’clock in the afternoon at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens, Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 9090 TN 100 in Nashville. Reverand Joseph Thacker will officiate the service.
