Marie Nelson Brown, beloved mother of Patricia Dishman (Ben) and Robert Brown (Bethany) died peacefully on Good Friday, April 14, 2017. Preceded in death by her loving husband Robert J. Brown; brother, Rev. Bedford Landers; sisters-in-law, Freddie Lane Cloud, Roberta Landers, Valeria Brown, Phyllis Landers and brothers-in-law Don Cloud and Edgar Moore Brown.
As a beloved wife and mother, Marie was an enormously kind, humble and caring woman. She never met a stranger and spent many days of her life enjoying the company of extended family and a large network of friends. During an active part of her long life she enjoyed time with her health club buddies, Pat, Marilyn, Rosie and Mai. During the later years of her life Marie was known by her fellow community living friends for her ever-present smile, sweet and gentle nature. Her focus in life was always directed at those around her.
Marie and husband Robert enjoyed 62 years of marriage and his death was a difficult adjustment, but she met that challenge the same way she met all adversity, with fortitude and perseverance. During their long life together, they especially enjoyed their active younger years raising Patricia and Bob and their retirement years filled with travel and quality time spent with close family and friends.
In addition to her children and their spouses, Marie is survived by her brothers; Paul and J.W. Landers, sister-in-law, Linda Landers, nieces; Donna Hertha (David), Melody Herrman (Fred), Carolyn McWilliams (Jim), Linda Whaley, Paula Smith and Dawn Price (Philip), nephews; David Brown, Jerry (Nancy), Jeff (Debbie), Tom (Luanne) and Scott Landers and many great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to this large extended family, special cousins Dean Collins and Martha Ann McCaghren were life-long friends and telephone buddies. Marie was particularly proud of her Dishman step family members; grandchildren, Ben, Jr. (O’Malley), Julie (Keith) and Alan (Anne); two very special great-granddaughters, Claire Dishman and Lauren Murray brought her joy and comfort as did younger great-great-grandchildren, Brice, Jacquelyn, Sawyer and Peter Dishman.
Marie’s life was one of strong love and faith in God. Marie and Robert were active members of First Southern Methodist Church and members of St. Paul Southern Methodist Church for over 20 years. While living at the Brighton Gardens community she faithfully attended services at nearby Grace Community Church with the help of her special friend and Grace Church volunteers. The family would also like to thank the many special staff at Brighton Gardens who assisted mom during the time she lived there.
In addition to her life as a mother, wife and homemaker, Marie held a special place in her heart for animals, especially cats. She and the family enjoyed the company of many cats throughout her long life. Callie Sue, her last feline companion joined Marie and Robert at Brighton until Callie’s death. Marie supported history through her dedicated membership to the Nashville Ladies Hermitage Association.
Marie’s family will always be proud of her special legacy of love and caring. Her friendship and support will be forever missed.
Gifts in Marie’s memory may be made to First Southern Methodist Church in Nashville, The Nashville Humane Association or a charity of your choice.
