James was a beloved and faithful friend to us and many who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be missed by all, but we will continue to share our fond memories of nights with him around the backyard fire pit !!

I came to know James at the Bellevue YMCA. I was relatively new the Y and James befriended me and introduced me to his friends Jim and Jerry. He was so proud of his family and we shared lots of stories and jokes. I will certainly miss seeing him at the YMCA… there will be a void. My sympathies to the family and his many friends.

To the family of Mr. Austell, So sorry to hear of his passing. We worked with James at Radnor Yards for many years. Always a soft spoken gentleman, that shared many stories of his family and the love they shared. May the many happy memories bring you comfort during this difficult time. Jim was a good man. Enjoyed working with him. We had lots of fun on the railroad. Lot of funny stories. As he was from Tullahoma and I was from Winchester, we knew a lot of same people. Our prayers are with family in this time of mourning.

We were so happy to know James & Violet through our Aunt Martha. Birch Bark Drive has its share of wonderful people who welcome all who come into their lives and onto their front porches! James was a true Southern gentleman – always thoughtful, hard working and generous with his time. May your many happy memories bring you all comfort in the days ahead…

Kim — Thanks for calling me about James’ passing. Although I’d already heard about it (it’s true bad news travels fast), it was good to get to talk to you. As I mentioned to you, there was only one house between our houses when we were kids so I logged a lot of time with Austells. James and I continued to stay in touch regarding our high school class’ reunions and it always was so good to chat with him. I’m so sorry about Doug and I not having been able to attend the funeral, but current health issues with both of us made it improbable, but you know where my mind and heart were.
    P. S………….Loved James’ Navy photo on the funeral home’s website!
